Gardening in PDX – Spring, Summer and Autumn 2012

Last year (2012), we got ourselves a garden plot at the Brentwood Community Garden in southeast Portland. The City of Portland-run garden plots are amazing! Any aspiring gardener can get a substantial plot of land, access to gardening tools, and all the water their plants can drink. But, of course, it also takes quite a bit of people-power to make those veggies grow, and since this was the first year we had this plot, a lot of our initial efforts were put into plot-scaping. As some of the photos show, we had to reclaim a fair chunk of land from the wily quack grass. That wasn’t too bad, but what the photos don’t show is how rocky the soil was and how much backbreaking work went into removing them. To make the soil suitable for anything other than quack grass, we dug up about the top 6 inches of soil over the whole 20′ x 20′ plot, sifted it through a large screen (pretty much like this one), and removed the bulk of the many, many, many small 1-2″ rocks that permeated the plot. The mountain of rocks can be viewed in some of the photos. But, once the heavy work was done and the plants were in, gardening was fun and easy! The photos below show the progression of our plot from a rocky patch of soil to something resembling a real garden, and then back to a patch of soil at the end of the season. And we’re doing it again this year, so hopefully there will be a series of 2013 photos to show at a later time.

Easter egg hunt – April 2012

Easter – the time when children celebrate the creation of chocolate, and when parents play mind games by hiding sweet treats in sometimes dangerous places for their children to find. What a great holiday!

Sadie with Chicken’r – March 2012

One of the cool activities that Sadie got to do during her time with Stumptown Kids preschool was to hang out with Chicken’r. What’s a Chicken’r, you may ask? And why hang out with one? Well, here’s the deal – Good old Chicken’r was sizable, stuffed rooster that was sent home with a select child for a weekend. The lucky kid then took Chicken’r on some adventure, and wrote about it in Chicken’r’s diary after it was all done. In this adventure, Sadie and Chicken’r made waffles, when for a ride on Portland’s Aerial Tram, and visited our local nature sanctuary near the Willamette River. Good times, good times…

Merry Christmas!!!

In spite of there being a severe lack of snow cues to guide us, I think we’ve successfully navigated through the Christmas season. Of course, this is mostly thanks to Christine, who worked really hard to make this a really special Christmas. She hung the outdoor lights, decorated the tree (with Sadie), baked cookies, adorned the mantle, sewed the stockings, wrapped the presents, cooked Christmas dinner, etc., etc. Besides Christine’s hard work, this Christmas is extra special because we are babysitting a neighbour’s kitten for a week. Her name is Min-O, and she’s full of raditude. Our kitty Larry pretends not to like her, but we know that he really does. Merry Christmas everyone! And here’s some pictures taken over the past couple of days…

Halloween Roundup

Yee haw! Another Halloween has come and gone, and this year the young whippersnapper Sadie donned her best sequins vest, her blackest boots, and set out to trick-or-treated where the buffalo don’t roam. In our neck o’ the woods, Halloween began on Oct 30 with the Monster March, where hundreds of parents and kids were corralled through the streets to show off their Halloween best. The next day, Sadie and her posse roamed the ‘hood for sweet, sweet candy. Oooh, wait, I have pictures…
